Independent Research on Life over 65 (a message from the committee)

We have been contacted by Pavel Rosenfeld who is carrying out research into how people over 65 experience social connection and everyday life in the UK - and what would help them stay connected, supported, and independent as they get older.

This is independent market research and not an academic study and he has also contacted other u3as. Participation is entirely voluntary, nothing is recorded without permission, and no personal data is stored.

Arts at home sessions (a message from Jo Anson)

We have been contacted by Art Explora, a non-profit arts organisation that aims to share arts and culture with everyone - locally, nationally and internationally - and inspire new encounters between arts and audiences.  

Arts at Home supports older people to access arts and culture by encouraging conversation and connection through art. They are looking for confident volunteers to participate in their "Arts at Home" sessions in residential care homes. In these sessions, volunteers introduce works of art of their choice and facilitate conversations around the artworks with residents. No prior professional experience is needed; they are provided with the necessary training. It might appeal to anyone who has an interest in the arts, wants to connect with their local community and have the opportunity to share their passion with those who may no longer be able to get involved themselves due to their living circumstances.  
They deliver sessions in care homes across Birmingham, and a couple in Edgbaston specifically that people might be local to.

Focus Art Club

A local group of visually impaired adults have been meeting at Focus Birmingham in Harborne for the last 23 years. We meet once a fortnight on a Thursday morning from 10am to 12 noon. Currently we have eight volunteers to help our members get the most out of their art activities. The volunteers include 3 former art teachers. Our members work individually in three main areas, Drawing and Painting , Pottery, Textiles including weaving collage , knitting and sewing. Two of the former art teachers are retiring at Christmas and we are looking for former teachers with experience in art activities who would enjoy coming along to a lively and enthusiastic group.

The Birmingham Settlement. This message is from Eileen Waddington.

A group of us get together on alternate Mondays, for a walk at Edgbaston Reservoir. The walk is organised by Birmingham Settlement, in conjunction with Age UK.  The Settlement is trying to increase the number of older people involved. It is such a lovely event, a healthy walk around the Reservoir - not too taxing for beginners or non-walkers and free tea or coffee before and after! I think some of our u3a members might be interested and might gain some benefit from the social aspect. You would be very welcome to come along. Members maybe interested to know that the Harborne Market is every 3rd Saturday in the month from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. in the space next to Home Bargains.

Also, there is an Artisan Market in Greenfield Crescent on the 2nd Saturday of the month 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Greenfield Crescent is closed to traffic on market days.
