Harborne & Edgbaston

"More Canals than Venice" by Roger Butler

Event type: Meeting
Date: 5th February 2025
Time: 2:15 pm
Venue: Harborne Baptist Church
Cost: Free for members

Continuing with a local theme Roger has an illustrated talk which will explore the history and heritage of Birmingham’s canals and will look at their fascinating engineering, distinctive architecture and unusual landmarks. Features include lock flights, aqueducts, bridges and tunnels; cottages, warehouses, pumping stations and reservoirs. The city’s first canal opened in 1772 and the waterway network soon developed into a huge spider’s web which connected all parts of the growing conurbation. Canals brought progress and prosperity and they are now an important attraction in and around the city centre.

After this talk, and while enjoying tea or coffee with fellow members, you may want to give  Veronica Richards our new Speaker's Secretary any ideas for speakers or subjects you wish to be included in 2025 programme for the coming year.
