The Ancient Rome group meets once a month, the 3rd Wednesday of each month, 1.45 for a 2.00pm start. We meet in the garden room at Harborne Baptist Church. We have on average a dozen or so members. Newcomers are welcome.

We deal with the history, literature and culture of Ancient Rome. We have been studying the period of the Emperors, starting with Augustus, who set a standard few others reached. Talks on subsequent members of the Julio- Claudian dynasty like Nero and Caligula illustrated how cruel and despotic Rome’s rulers could be.

We have enjoyed talks on Vespasian, the founder of the Flavian dynasty and thought to be the ‘good Emperor’, and his son Domitian who had a mixed reputation. Interesting presentations on later Emperors Trajan and Hadrian have brought us to the 2nd century CE. As well as our study of the Emperors we have had talks on Roman myths and on the lives and impact of Seneca and Pliny the Elder. Our plan is to continue learning about later Emperors, interspersed with the odd poet and philosopher and other aspects of Roman life.
We have on average a dozen or so members. Newcomers are welcome.
